October Caddis Soft Hackle

October Caddis Soft Hackle

As mentioned before in the blog on the blog for the October Never Sink Caddis this is a major food source for fish entering fall and the winter months.  It is one of the top hatches for producing large trophy size fish.  This pattern is tied to be fished at the begging of the hatch just before the fish begin rising to the hatching bugs.  If you haven't experienced a fish take a swinging soft hackle you are truly missing out.  This fly is truly versatile in many ways.  First you can tie this in different colors to match any caddis hatch or caddis pattern you are fishing.  This means this one pattern can be used to tie a wide variety of different Caddis hatches by changing the color of the fly and size of the hook.  It is also very versatile in that it can be fished an a multitude of ways.  First is alone on a traditional swing, or even on a dead drift up stream presentation.  You will find it  a trailing fly on a nymph as well.

Why put a tail on a caddis pattern? I suppose it makes the fly more versatile but most people don’t.
